I guess it boils down to 1) human tendency to take the lazy way out and follow beaten paths, and 2) being surrounded daily in a religion where everything is couched in language of violence and war?

What I am saying is that they can simply start their own one and not be a part of the CCC. Why do they have to form the NUS division of the CCC?

I mean, the NUS CCC is sort of like the SG division of the Girl Guides or the Boys' Brigade or the Red Cross, you get what I mean? It's not a matter of joining the worldwide group, or refusing to, it is that this group is the NUS division of the CCC, so the students did not have a choice in names at all.

I don't deny that the connotations are ... dubious, to say the least, let me make that clear, just that the students were not the ones who chose the name.

While your remarks may have some truth in them, you still cannot deny the fact that one cannot both be a Christian and a Buddhist, at least from the Christian point of view.

Jason, it's highly disturbing that you don't find anything wrong with the poster. Just shows that you share the same mindset as the people who wrote those very insensitive words in the poster. Truly sad.

Hi Laurence, as far as I know, they're the NUS Charter of a worldwide group, so I don't think the students themselves has much of a choice in names. Also, much of the language used in the Judeo-Christian faith seems to be couched in terms of war and violence, possibly because of their origins as a minority religion in their region of origin?

I have to agree with Laurence on this one. Jason's counter argument is faulty in the sense that it is countering a totally different issue. This whole debate isn't about Christians spreading the faith; it's about the act of demeaning other beliefs, it's so un-Christly insensitive. I see this argument easily being thrown up as a first defense by those involved simply because it is misleadingly convincing. The fact of the matter is, things aren't about Christians spreading the faith everywhere (which I personally feel should be done through subtle but consistent actions instead of imposing carelessly to anyone and everyone), it's simply about thinking before saying. It's common sense man, c'mon! If what they were trying to do is give Christ a bad reputation, then well done! A+

I am expressing bigotry against bigotry, NOT against Christian beliefs. Unless you mean to tell me Christianity exists to stomp on other religions.

They can go spread their religion. I have nothing against that. What I have against is their stomping on other religions to pass on their message.

Bigotry is the intolerance toward those who hold different opinions.

Isn't what you are expressing bigotry too? You are obviously not tolerating the Christian belief of world evangelism.

Every religion tries to spread its belief. In the end it's up to the person himself to decide whether he wants to believe or not.

Truth is mutually exclusive. I do not see why whatever that was described in the poster was disgusting.

I will not post what NUS have responded to me, since this is still a matter that they are investigating. I will however say this. The Dean of OSA shut down their site on the same day, within 4 hours of me emailing them. I think that this shows that they are really putting attention to the problem.

Assuming normal distribution is crazy. Do you know if NUS releases anonymized raw marks?

My suspicion is a graph made up of 2 peaks. Peak on the left would encompass people who are clueless, and peak on the right represent people with good understanding of the material.

thanks :) i'm really glad my efforts showed up in the teaching feedback.

I had actually taught using a non-approved method, letting the students learn everything themselves, which some profs actually criticize me for it.
