I think I’ve done 3 weeks of work at Chalkboard already, and so far, I feel really happy working there. And I was thinking, I’ve never been so happy working anywhere else before.
So, why am I so happy here? Yup, and I was thinking over this in my sleep, and by morning I had my answer.
- I get to do real stuff
- I feel like they trust me to do the right thing
- They give you a task and they get out of your way.
Despite being just an intern, I don’t do stuff that is hidden behind everyone else’s work. I get my own projects. See that pretty chalkboard on the top right? I’m one of the 3 guys behind it. First week of work I did one of their customized mobile sites too.
And they are not afraid to put what I do out there.
I get alot of freedom to add on stuff onto what I should be doing, especially the nitty gritty details. They don’t list out a list of specs and ask me to follow it down to the last letter. They just give me an idea of what the project I’m doing needs to be able to do, and let me figure it out the rest by myself.
If I’m right, their SE model is the Agile model. So what happens is, no one is supervising me. They tell me what needs to be done, and I show them when I’m done. I don’t have to report to some guy once every 2 hours. The only reporting is done during the daily stand up meeting, where I say what I’ve done since the previous day’s meeting, and what I’m going to do next. Which is pretty standard in the agile world.
I can think of at least a few more reasons, but I guess that’s it for now. Time to head down to the office =D
Oh yea, and they care.
